Review from 2009
KATONAH, NY..Some dealers arrived to set up on Sunday for this Monday, Memorial Day Antiques Fair. The weather predictions for the afternoon were worrisome. Even tornados were possible and thunder could be heard. Yet over Lasdon Park the sun kept shining and only a few sprinkles fell for less than five minutes. Monday was just another perfect day for this 24th annual event. Attendance reached just under 2000 people and although 52 dealers were pre-paid, those paying as drive ups increased the show size to 70 booths of generous proportions. Customers started to arrive an hour early and formed a long line waiting for the opening at exactly 10 AM. The field quickly filled with customers and remained busy all day long.
The picnic tent provided seating so customers could eat while listening to the singers known as Powderfinger. Bob and Norm have been coming to this event for years and have developed a following from the show. They are popular entertainers at local and NYC clubs. Their familiar repertoire of folk and easy listening favorites appealing to all ages. Customers were elated to be able to get a fun antiques show, a concert, lots of complimentary trade papers and a place to sit in the shade on a glorious day, all for the $7 price of admission. Many stayed for hours!
The majority of the dealers who reported in did fairly well with more realistic goals set for the times. The Kugelmans from West Hartford, CT (selling etchings and prints as well as vintage kitchen accessories), said they had the best show since 2008. The Freemans (Blue Shutter Antiques, Montgomery, NY) sold a wonderful wrought iron patio set; a perfectly refinished wagon seat was an early sale for Mark and Teresa Ridgeway (Terry's Treasures, Mahopac, NY). The two rug dealers were pleased, Jorge Vasquez from Peekskill, NY, and Aminullah Noori of New Milford, CT. Julius Klepacz (A Charmed Life, Danbury, CT) reported doing very well with her amazing colorful chenille bedspreads. Ann and Mark Marsh (By Ann Marsh, Danbury, CT) were busy all day selling pottery, metal and wood containers and garden pieces. The Edens from Long Island were very excited by their jewelry sales. Also reporting a most successful show, yet again, were the Reinhardts from Woonsocket, RI. They offered World's Fair memorabilia, farm and kitchen tools. The Bermans (Twentieth Century Ltd., Guilford, CT) said they had a very good show, not quite equal to last year but still enough to make them happy. Jewelry dealer, Diane Belford of Bridgewater, CT, set up a beautiful display under the big tent and her efforts were well rewarded by her sales. The show felt good, people had fun and to quote Flora Haller, Chappaqua, NY antiques dealer who came as a customer, Cord Shows always has a buzz, a certain energy. How true that was, you just had to feel it!
Right now Vivien Cord and Ed McClure are gearing up for their biggest event of the year, the 17th annual Antiques in the Church Yard. Over 3000 people are expected on Saturday, July 4th, in S. Salem/Vista, NY. No doubt there will be 120 dealers packed onto the front yard of Stevens Church at 8 Shady Lane. Cord Shows Ltd. returns to Lasdon Park for the 25th Labor Day Antiques Fair on Monday, September 7th. For information see Cordshows.com or call 914-273-4667.
